Mximum visibility distances in a COOP

Post by II/JG54_Emil »

I wonder if we shouldn´t adapt the visibilty distances to our weatherconditions in our campaigns.

Standart dotrange in IL2 is 16km but it´s certainly too little in clear weather conditions and certainly too far in bad weather conditions.

I had a discussion a few years back with a navy pilot, about the visibilty distances at daytime in clear weather conditions.
He said that you could spot a fighter plane up to 25-30km away.

The distance can be set via console or via the rcu file.
Here is a good article explaining how it works:
http://www.airwarfare.com/sow/index.php ... Itemid=163

another good article, saying the same here:

I found a table of visibilty on German wikipedia, which may be of help as a reference:
Weather condition / Visibility in km
Very clear 50
Clear 20
Slightly hazy 10
Hazy 4
Strong haze, light fog 2
Moderate fog 1
Dense fog, heavy rain 0.1
Extreme fog, blizzards 0.01

Something that needs testing is the visibility distance of ships and other groundobjects.
Which would be a pitty since I am convinced you can spotships further that 30km from the air.
But this may be a totally different topic, since these objects may not affected at all.
