THE IMPERIAL FLEET UNDER ATTACK. FIRST SERIOUS LOSSES

Image

In the Mariannas Islands struggle, Americans contend blow for blow and attack our fleet to the West of Guam.

Today 19 June 1944, at late morning, F6F Hellcat, armed with bombs, penetrate our defenses and intercept our convoy load of troops in navigation towards Saipan front.

Heavy losses:

Class 4 transport Kinou and 2 Steamer sunk with the loss of all their precious cargo.
Even a Kagero Class Destroyer is dispersed, not yet clear its last position.

The Air Defense promptly attacks the raiders, part of which, freed of the weapons, opposed validly our Pilots.

High losses on both sides.

In total U.S. Air Force left in sea 32 aircraft.
40 losses for Imperial Air Force.

Multi-engine reconnaissance enemies have been reported in the area.

Our brave Attack Forces, although at the cost of great sacrifices, sink a Kidd Class Destroyer and a TCC .

DEADLY HIT HJMS SHOKAKU CARRIER

Image

Today at h 07:56, after passing the defensive shield of the Imperial Fleet, 3 Avenger of USS Lexington, (Cpt. E.A.Classic & E.F. Splash) reach the position to attack the Shokaku (Akagi class) Carrier.
High potential Bombs hit the bridge of Shokaku.
The second of them, piercing the bridge, penetrates the underlying hangar full of planes and bombs.
The chain of explosions generated reaches the bombs storage , blowing up the ship, which tilts and sinks quickly, dragging with it the precious cargo of men and aircraft.

Image

The escorts provided promptly to the rescue of survivors.

In nothing is worth the courage of the few defenders of the 150 th Sentai which, though rejected a first strike against the flagship Carrier HIJMS Taiho, nothing could against the second surprise attack.

Also unsuccessful were raids carried by the courageous Imperial Attack Air forces against the American fleet bound for Guam. The screen Radar and Aircraft of the Yankee defense did not allow our brave pilots to bomb targets.

Tragic losses of the day:

1 Aircraft Carrier Shokaku (Akagi class)

1 Fiji class cruiser

1 Akizuki class destroyer

149 aircraft of various types

Undoubtedly a big score for the U.S. Force at relatively low price of 24 aircraft.

"Tenno Heika Banzai (天皇陛下萬歲)!"

"Lower in means, power, number, but not of courage, the extraordinary Pilots of the Rising Sun, as ancient Samurai, pass through the fire wall raised by the Americans to stop them.

Targeted by enemy fighters and powerful flak, attacked from all directions, on their slow and fragile aircraft, these heroes of the Rising Sun do not stop and, in defiance of life, reach and devastate the American Carrier Essex. "

Only narrowly the U.S. Carrier does not sink but its hull is devastated and the speed reduced.
