Scenario 1: Korosten' - 28 December 1943

by IV/JG7_4Shades
This is the first of our scenarios in the KZBK Stations campaign.

Background
After liberating Kiev, the First Ukrainian Front (FUF) paused in November 1943 to rest and replenish itself. Taking advantage of this break in the rout west from the Dnepr, 4th Panzerarmee Oberkommando (4.PzAOK) stabilized its flimsy positions, holding key transport centres along a longitudinal axis from the south at Berdichev-Kazatin, through Zhitomir to Korosten' in the north. The appalling weather gave respite from the incessant Soviet air attacks, but also meant that the scarce reinforcements were slow to materialize at the front.

On 24 December 1943 the FUF mobilized, throwing several infantry and armour divisions at Berdichev-Kazatin and Zhitomir. The lightly defended garrison of Korosten' (LIX Armee Korps, LIX.AK) watched and waited nervously as its contacts with the supporting south flank (XIII Armee Korps) evaporated under massive Soviet assaults. LIX.AK tried its best to provide distraction by probing Soviet logistical areas at Yusefovka and Chepovichi, but a stalemate ensued.

Then, on the morning of 28 December 1943, with XIII.AK in headlong retreat south to Zhitomir, LIX.AK, alone and significantly understrength, awoke to a full scale assault by three Soviet divisions. The Soviet intentions were clear. LIX.AK asked 4.PzAOK for orders, and was told to hold Korosten' for as long as possible. If it was forced out of Korosten' by overwhelming force, it was ordered to make its way to Volodarsk-Volinskiy to join the garrison there and await relief.

German Objectives
* Hold Korosten Train Station with at least 8 platoons until noon on 28 December 1943
* Hold Volodarsk-Volinskiy with at least 8 platoons until 5 pm on 28 December 1943
* Maintain LIX.AK with at least 50% of its initial capital strength (measured in points) until 4 am 29 December 1943
* Keep at least 2/3 of German generals alive until 4 am 29 December 1943

Soviet Objectives
* Capture and hold Korosten' Train Station before noon on 28 December 1943
* Capture and hold Volodarsk-Volinskiy before 5 pm on 28 December 1943
* Reduce LIX.AK to less than 50% of its initial capital strength before 4 am on 29 December 1943, whilst maintaining 70% of initial FUF capital strength.
* Keep all Soviet generals alive until 4 am 29 December 1943

Victory Conditions
If we run 24 engrossing missions, display good cooperative behaviours, and have fun, then we all win.

Realization in SEOW
* This scenario will be operated using the Kiev_AP map, hosted in HSFX v6.0.17 or higher. Ground operations will be confined to the rectangle defined by the north-west corner of the map stretching south-east through Dabryn to AF-11.
* The scenario will last for 24 consecutive missions, starting at 0500 hours on 28 December and finishing after the 0400 hours mission on 29 December. Each mission will last for 60 minutes.
* German forces may withdraw at two ground resupply points on the western edge of the map at any time.
* German air forces will be based at Lipniki Field and at Vinnica North-West Airbase. A single off-map base west of Korosten' will be available for recon flights only.
* Soviet air forces will be based at Veprem and Gostomel.
* It is hoped we can represent all combat divisions and regiments at 1/3 historical strength, maybe more.
* There will be no reinforcements available for either side, and no industrial production of units or fuel.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

Cheers,
4Shades

PS: Here is an FMB file with the front line for the evening of 27 December 1943 near Korosten'. I am proposing that we populate the front line from just north-west of Lipniki in AB-17 as far south-east as Dabryn in AD-13.

Only histirc difference is schwere Panzer-Abteilung 509 was operating south of Shitomer.
How many times a week are the missions planned?

That's nearly right. They started off on the Kiev-Zhitomir road, defending against an armoured thrust, then went west and south after a while.

I have got confused with the location and timing, so I will remove sPz.Abt 509.

Thanks Emil.

I tried to recapitulate the "authorized" strength for German order of battle at Korosten.

I think all units, with exception of Korps-Abt.C, should have a general penalty of 75% as Barratt states: ..."the front line strength of most of the German divisions at the time was 25% or less"
The Korps-Abt.C was just formed on 2. November 1943 from the remnants of 183., 217. and 339. Infanterie-Divisions.
I think they cannot have suffered much from war attrition. Maybe reducing them by 10% is ok.

I find one oddities in 7. Panzerdivision!
German Wikipedia states that 7.PzD was equipped with Tigers in autumn 1943.
Assuming that the source is credible, can it be that those PzVI were all lost until the end of December?

According to my sources, horses were also in widespread use in the Russian Front at this stage of the war. I would suspect that we could replace 30-50% of trucks with horses, for red and blue.

By the way, what does "25% respectively 90% from Korps-Abt. C: " mean?

cheers,

50% horses sound good.
IV/JG7_4Shades wrote:By the way, what does "25% respectively 90% from Korps-Abt. C: " mean?
maybe I was writing too much and one couldn´t see the actual assumtion:
II/JG54_Emil wrote:...

Assuming that the source is credible, can it be that those PzVI were all lost until the end of December? ...
From what you wrote most units frontline strength were 25% or lower.
This does not apply to Korps-Abt.C. From what I read it was just formed from the remnants of several divisions before the battle and was at divisional strength when formed.
My assumption was that in the end of December the fronline strength was at around 90% of the planned strength.

The total numbers are 90% from Korps-Abteilug C and 25% of the rest of LIX. Armee at Korosten.

The 25% are nevertheless quite controversal.
25.PzD on 01.12.1943 was at 85,086% of its planned personnel strength.

Or does it make more sense to assume that Korpsabteilung C, formed from the remnants of 183., 217. and 339. Infanterie-Division, were each down to 15-17%?
That would make the Korpsabteilung C 45-51% of full strength.

It makes sense to a certain degree.
The problem is it´s 100% speculation.

I not sure which way is best to go.

And I hope you guys don´t mind me raving on about "correct" units and composition, I´m just trying to get it as close to the real situation as possible.

One more thing about the moral condition of the most German units in the area.
From the Zustandberichten I read the new arrivals were cherry boys, they in the best cases only had 2 months of training and therefore(in case of 25.PzD for example):
Kampfwert der Division: Für Angriffsaufgaben zunächst bedingt geeignet, für Abwehraufgaben geeignet, im Großkampf Krisenfestigkeit fraglich.
Combat value of the Division:
For assault roles initially limited suitability, suitable for defense duties, panic-proofness questionable.
Which means this could/should have an effect on the moral of the German troops.

This is good information Emil. The only trouble is that it is hard to know what is correct.

I agree we have to simulate the different quality of troops present.

OK, what do we need to do next?

Next tasks:

Finalize a technics mod for the campaign. This should be a "steppe" mod, given that there will be limited scope for dense urban areas.

Also we need to specify SEOW orbats for the combat units involved. I would be hesitant about having more than 1000 platoons in total just because of the command workload. If we can manage 6 active commanders, then the workload becomes tolerable.

Then we need to select teams and get each commander to place his/her forces on the template. I will do merging and initialization.

Cheers,
4S

Just for clarity, regarding airbases, the airbases enabled in the MP now will be the only airbases operative in the campaign. Inoperative airbases will have no fuel associated with them.
